Final Grade 66/70
The Thompson letter and assignment were not my brain child but I am extremely happy I used them and had my students compete in the National WWII Museum's competition. This assignment asked student to deeply analyse a primary source so that they could then respond to that source. They needed to make a direct connection to their own lives, and were asked to show all of that work in the form of a letter.
I think the only thing I would change about this assignment is to scaffold students better in order to give them the chance to break down the steps and work on one at a time. As it was, we read the letter as a class and had a peer editing day, but I think the students as a whole group would have benefited from a deeper analysis of the Thompson Letter. I also think a brain storming session could have helped students flesh out new ideas to add to their personal connection with Thompson.
