Student Rubric: Application
p.Once students have understood and b articulated an argument, and then made deep connections between two events, they need to be able to put it all together in a cohesive presentation. That presentation could be written, spoken, drawn, etc. If they have completed the first three sections well, there will be all of this information in their head that can be turned into a product that is full of thought and can show real learning. This is the type of work that will help students to feel confident but also to retain more of the information and connections that they initially made. Brett Jones (2009) refers to this process as empowering the student in his article, “Motivating Students to Engage in Learning: The MUSIC Model of Academic Motivation”, and has this to say,
Empowerment refers to the amount of perceived control that students have over their learning. It does not matter whether the instructor thinks that he or
she is giving students control; rather, what matters is that students perceive that
they have control over some aspect of their learning. The optimal amount of
control needed by students to be motivated will vary from student to student
and will likely depend upon many variables including the difficulty of the content,
the ability of the students, and the extent of students’ prior experiences related
to the content (p. 247).
By asking students to create a product, we are empowering them to be the controllers of the knowledge and to share it with other people.
